Just asking!

Why do children vomit in long parabolas on carpet then along a hall and through a bathroom before they get to a sink/ loo by which time they are all empty?

Why is it easy to open drawers but apparently very difficult to close them?

Why are there so many socks that nobody will wear that match and all the popular socks are mismatched? (A metaphor for life?)

Why does a child always get sick the day you have planned a major Ikea/ op shop excursion?

Why do my children all play huge instruments?

Why does blogger never seem to work when I have a lot to say?

Why do all the parties happen on one week end?

Why does nothing happen on the potty but always a few minutes after dismount?

Why does it take three minutes for a three year old to put on 'morning clothes' and thirty minutes for a thirteen year old to put on a uniform with less components?

Why do they like to get dressed in a public area of our house leaving jamies strewn around like the morning after a frat party?

Why is my phone always out of charge when I get in the car in the morning when I know I charged it last night? (Must change that password again.)

Why has the three year old started responding with "Why" to every answer I give her?

Why?

WHY?

  1. See, when you're having a totally shit day, even a funny post about vomit can make you smile! Well it worked for me. Thanks Annie :)

My elder son's best ever 'Why': 'Why is a wall?' He was 3. He was also adamant he didn't mean 'What is a wall for?', no it was much more existential than that! There were tears before bedtime due to his mother's total inability to furnish a satisfactory answer. Why?!

  2. A song came to mind: "Tell Me Why???!" (Jimmy Summerville I believe...) ;-) Sing it as loud and as high as he does and I'm certain all the 'why-ing' will disappear! :-)

  3. What would be worser a vomit up ate hallway or a poop on the floor? Why is there still washing in the basket after you have spent all day washing, hanging, drying, folding, sorting, finding odd socks and putting away?

    2. I pads are ornery critters with their own rules but they do let you see blog photos sometimes when the big computer is tired.
The washing thing is because they keep changing their clothes!!!

  4. I ask those exact same questions many times myself and I truly have no answers!

  5. You have indeed touched on a metaphor for life.
But for me, why does a grandad still create the same mess?
    (Probably not the potty stuff!)
Does he still need a cleaning-up mother?

    1. That may be a post 40 male thing in general. Mine is the other way and constantly cleans up after us which also drives one potty!

  6. Excellent questions. I wish I had the answers, too. Thankfully we are through "why?/WHY?/but, why?" response to everything I say, phase (for now). Funny at first but quickly replaced by screaming on the inside while I calmly answered.

  7. Ladies it is not the first "why" so much as the subsequent "why"s to the answers in a long endless stream. Why can I not reply on the button that says reply?

  13. I did that multiple vomit thing down the VERY long carpeted hallway at my grandmothers beach house as a kid- at least 5 stops along the way.Could not eat spaghetti marinara for about another 30 years as the memories were way to vivid. Hope your girl gets well quickly, Roboboy had ONE sick day off school last year due to vomiting and of course it happened the day both Legoman and I had arranged off work/kids to see the accountant/dentist/haircuts etc. They have total radar for reckless parental behaviour. So what else is there besides the trombone and euphonium? A bassoon? or a harp? We are not getting why, we are still getting no, not and terrible whining fits. melx

  16. I have the same problem with drawers, and my children all wear odd socks the whole time - even though two of them are grown up - sign of growing up in a disorderly household! And I still have a 13 year old who takes an hour to get ready in the morning - even if it is just school uniform!

  17. Odd socks - there should be a law banning matched pairs; over-stuffed drawers - closed perfectly when I put in nicely-ironed clean clothes in there; discarded papers with drawings on them - should I keep them? All??; empty sweet wrappers - don't I say everytime there'll be no more if I find another wrapper? Everytime....

I empathise with all your issues and I'm afraid I ask exactly the same question. Why? And why does it matter? Well, perhaps it doesn't.

  18. Oh my goodness. I do remember the whys. I am far away from that now as my two are 35 and 33. I do miss it though, having little ones around. I'm off this weekend to see the grandbabies in Georgia and intend to have a thoroughly wonderful time of little kisses, little hugs and sweet smiles. Hang in the Annie, soon you will wonder where the time has gone. I loved your post. It brought a laugh for my day.
